There are times when God seems far away, hidden, even non-existent. For many people the question is whether there even is a god \u2013 or what kind of a God He is. Some perceive \u201cGod\u201d as very vague and general; others want a god who is close to them, even acts like a personal servant to meet their needs.<\/p>\n
As Christians, we know a personal God \u2013 in fact, a God in three persons, blessed Trinity! He is the Creator of all the world, yet He wants to know each of us as an individual, even calling us by name.<\/p>\n
He is also our Redeemer, our Savior, who has met our deepest needs in both spirit and body. He has watched His creation go away from Him, but He has come to claim it back.<\/p>\n
But even for us Christians, God can seem far away, hidden. Where is God in a world of evil, hardships, open sin and rebellion against Him? Where is God in a world of earthquakes and tsunamis, even as we in the United States both as citizens and as Lutheran brothers and sisters support you in Japan, and even as we in the United States have ourselves experienced a record number of natural disasters in these recent years!<\/p>\n
Are these punishments from God? Or is God involved at all?? The result of climate change? Simple chance? A really, really bad year? Or just the result of a fallen creation that is \u201cgroaning\u201d as St. Paul says in Romans 8.<\/p>\n
Our text from Isaiah speaks to God\u2019s people at a time when they wondered where God was. Was He there at all \u2014 or just hiding His face?<\/p>\n
At that time, God\u2019s people were facing destruction by the nations around them, first Assyria and then Babylon. And in these well-known words of Isaiah 40, the prophet speaks a message of comfort. Actually God was telling His prophets to comfort His people, to announce to them that they were not forgotten or forsaken, even if it appeared that way.<\/p>\n
They had faced despair before. The history of God\u2019s people is filled with times of sorrow and sadness, destruction and despair. Remember the slavery in Egypt? God did, too. And remember what happened: God led them out by a mighty hand, but right into the wilderness. They were not so sure this was a good idea, but God had a greater idea. He would form them as His people at Sinai.<\/p>\n
Now at the time of Isaiah, God had said He would do a new thing,\u00a0like a second exodus<\/em>. This one would not be a slow journey, lost in the desert. He would make a highway, an expressway (like a bullet train?) for them to come home to their land of His promise.<\/p>\n In fact, all flesh \u2013 everyone \u2013 would now see and witness God\u2019s presence with His people.<\/p>\n This is a wonderful proclamation of comfort and joy, and it comes to us now in the second week of another Advent season. Again we are reminded that we are waiting for God, a God who is not seen yet is present with us in a very real and personal way.<\/p>\n The focus of this text really comes in verse 9, when a messenger comes to God\u2019s people to say, \u201cHere is your God! He is here. He is with you. Can you see the signs of His presence?\u201d<\/p>\n He has forgiven your sins. He has given you life. It is a life that no nation or war or even natural death can take away from us.<\/p>\n His arm is an arm of power, ruling the kingdom of God. His arm is the tender arm of a good shepherd gently holding the little lambs.<\/p>\n Dear Christian friends:<\/p>\n Our God is real. He may seem hidden but He has shown Himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ. That is the message of Advent: Our God has come to earth. He has come to save us. And he will come again.<\/p>\n Our Gospel shows the connection to the last of those great prophets, John the Baptist, who echoed the words of our text in announcing Jesus. It is as though he said to the people of his day, \u201cHere is your God!\u201d<\/p>\n In Jesus we see our God. He came to bring comfort not just by\u00a0announcing<\/em>\u00a0that our sin is forgiven and that our punishment is past, but even to take the punishment for our sin upon Himself, as Isaiah would say later, \u201cHe has born our griefs and carried our sorrows.\u201d<\/p>\n By his death and resurrection, he came to give us a life that can never be taken away, not by natural catastrophe and not by natural death. He came to bring us peace, even in the midst of a groaning creation. Our creator and redeemer has make us into a new creation, in Christ Jesus, that nothing on earth can destroy.<\/p>\n Yes, even in the sufferings of this present age, God is with us, to comfort and sustain us.<\/p>\n Even in the successes and prosperity of this age, God is with us, to show us what lasts forever.<\/p>\n Even in the struggles of our daily life, God is with us, to forgive us,<\/p>\n And even when God seems far away and hidden, God is with us.<\/p>\n If I may close with a personal story, you, too, may have played \u201chide and seek\u201d with your small children. Our house is one in which you can run in a circle, from the front hall to the sitting room to the kitchen to the front hall. Daddy would hide and the children would run around and around to find him. Actually, I would often just stand in the corner, but my daughter would run right past me. Then I would step out and she would run right into me. And do you know what she would say? \u201cDaddy, I found you.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, I was there all the time. And she did not find me as much as I revealed my presence to her. But she delighted to know that I was there, and she would say, \u201chere you are!\u201d<\/p>\n Dear friends in Christ,<\/p>\n Advent is God\u2019s time to say, \u201chere I am.\u201d<\/p>\n Isaiah spoke to people walking in darkness, and he said, \u201cHere is your God!\u201d<\/p>\n We live in a world that runs right past the presence of our God, and even we sometimes wonder where \u2013 and why \u2013 God seems to be hiding. But In Jesus Christ, God says: Here is your God!<\/p>\n In the person of a savior who came into our world, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, God says: Here is your God!<\/p>\n In the real person of a savior who touched lives with God\u2019s grace, who came to comfort those who mourn, to strengthen the weak, even to raise the dead, HERE IS YOUR GOD!<\/p>\n By a life given for us, even unto death, yes death on a cross, for us and for our salvation: HERE IS YOUR GOD!<\/p>\n By our lives lived in his grace, by his power, and in his service, God says to the world around us: HERE IS YOUR GOD.<\/p>\n In the fellowship of faith that brings us together from different places and cultures, to gather around the presence of Christ, where those of every nation and tribe and people and tongue sing, \u201cHoly, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Saba\u2019oth,\u201d our God comes to us in Word and water, in bread and wine: HERE IS YOUR GOD.<\/p>\n And know this, that even in the darkest days of life, and into the face of death, our God has been there and given us a new life where we shall see him face to face, and forever say, here is our God!<\/p>\n In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, AMEN.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u30a4\u30b6\u30e4\u66f840\u7ae01-11\u7bc0 \u8aac\u6559: \u30a2\u30f3\u30c9\u30eb\u30fc\u30fb\u30d0\u30fc\u30c6\u30eb\u30c8 \u535a\u58eb \u2013 Rev.
